Sorry I haven't written this week, I've been piecing back together my computer. It wasn't anything tragic, in fact I brought this one on myself. After 3 years of law school, the hard drive was nearly corrupted with aborted downloads, random files, and had enough HOSTS conflicts to make a number of pages nearly impossible to view. When all else fails, blank the sucker and try again. Outlook gave me some fits, and now I can't seem to find my Firefox bookmarks or passwords. The latter being the real bummer since the former mostly resided in IE too. The only bookmark file I found was from the 16th and had nearly nothing in it. Guess I'll just piece the passwords back together as I come across them. Yeah, I'm lazy and use auto complete, so shoot me. In the meantime, the reading drought is over in a big way. I cleared three books in the last two days alone. My personal fav of the bunch has to be "How I Paid For College" by Marc Acito. Quick read and if you enjoy musical theater, an absolute scream.
Right after the Bar I couldn't bring myself to read books. That's a really sad thing for me since that was one thing I had before law school. After all the reading I had done, my ambition was lacking. I think I've finally snapped that trend. I knocked through Eragon in a day. I know it's a kid's book and such, but so is Harry Potter and I liked that. I also always enjoyed Anne McCaffery, so I figured dragons are good to read about. I got sucked right in like the old days. Perhaps this is a sign of things to come. In the mean time I need to get the sequel. Back to the library!
The job hunt never ends y'know. I get no nibbles from my resume, and occasionally the school sends out possible job ideas. Of course, nothing comes from them either. I did a survey the other day informing the school that yes, in fact, I'm still unemployed. That gained me a phone call and an appointment to review my resume. I at this point have begun to doubt my employability, at least until when the Bar results come in, so what happens? I get a phone call from a placement firm about being a secretary. Of course, this was a permanent hire, so when the firm actually met me and decided to read my resume, I wasn't what they wanted at all. Maybe they'll get me a temp job. Either way, I got tested today. To be a good secretary you need mad skills. So I was tested to see if I could spell, file, type, and do data entry. After doing the Bar Exam, this was actually sort of fun. And yes, I do have the mad skills necessary. So glad to see the degree didn't go to waste after all. And if anyone needs someone with 11,700 kph and 72 wps, I'm here for you.
So with nothing to do andseemingly no control over what life I lead, I'm trying to at least take care of things I can work on. Clean house, do laundry, and yard work. And with my mother now also out of work due to a merger layoff, we are a potent force. The bushes stand no mercy now. Next on tap, break out the carpet cleaning machine. Yeah, my life is jam packed. Who's up for lunch?
My spouse's classmates, being the nice sort of people asked about me during the first days of class. They all know I sat for the Bar in July and were wondering how life has been going since that milestone. The answer was, "Beanie is doing okay." However, a theory was floated by my spouse that there is a great untreated group of former law students suffering from Bar Depression. Here we've put off a great deal of our life, not only for the Bar Exam, but through law school in general. For those of us who weren't successful enough to get a job lined up before the exam, there is a great miasma of uncertainty floating about our heads. We're sort of lawyers, but not really, and we have alot of things going for us now with all this free time but no ambition to do any of it. In some book somewhere this must all add up to a depressive state. In a way, it's a relief to give this feeling a label even if I don't know what to do with it now that I've put it in a box.
I'm watching the qualifying laps for tomorrow's F1 race in Belgium at Spa Francorchamps, and I just found out something I didn't know. (What sort of egomaniacal statement is that?) Anywho, you know the Michelin Man? The big white dude that looks like a stack of tires? Did you know he has a name? Did anyone know his name? This is so a trivia question for later. Try to answer it without looking it up. I'll update with an answer later.
UPDATE: His name is Bibendum. Turns out he was originally known as the road drunkard and has been around since 1898. I guess we just can't handle Latin here in the states.
I know I'm falling down on the job here. I just got my stats for the week, and it seems that the few readers I had are leaving in droves. I'm sorry for this. I can't cat blog, I have no cat. I can't talk about my crazy career, I have none. And now with the spouse on a business trip, I sit on the couch all day. Oh, and play Tiger Woods PGA 2005. I have a player who by the day looks more and more like me. So I watch TV, occasionally eat something, and daily go outside to get the mail. Call it depressing, call it what you will, it's the life of the Bean these days. Help.
I know I haven't posted in a while. I've been in a bit of a funk. Between the 24/7 news watching and the crazy sleep patterns I've developed, things get strange. I don't want to waste gasoline, so for the most part I stay put. I turned to home bartending this evening. While my Long Island Ice Tea could take paint off a car, the second drink I made was mighty tasty. It doesn't have a name, but I'm sure it has one. Orange Vodka, orange juice and Sierra Mist. Sweet and orangy. And oh so relaxing. And how many G&T's can one person drink without getting boring anyway?
