Well, the paper is nearly complete. I need only 3 1/2 more pages to get to 25 pages. I even like my thesis. Just the concept of a thesis in a paper of mine makes me want to break out in laughter. What sort of academic am I? Anyway, I write because I care...and procrastinate. Either way I had to tell you about what I just saw on television. There's an ARCA race tonight on Speed Channel. I don't normally watch ARCA because it can be a wreck fest, but the name of the race caught my attention. It's the Quaker Steak & Lube 100. Now if you're like me you'll see that and say "Wow, that must be a typo...it should be the Quaker State & Lube 100." If you say it fast enough it even sounds like it. I wandered away from the television and came back to find a commercial on for Quaker Steak & Lube. Turns out there is a number of these places and they're known for their wings. Once we stopped laughing (there was a mighty catchy theme song) and debating the finer points of what exactly the lube would consist of, the first non-silly thought that came to mind was, would this be a dilution of trademark for Quaker State? Scarily enough, the non-law student in the family thought the same thing. We've been together too long.

First Jaguar puts a diamond on the nose cone of Christian Klien's F1 car. He gets into an accident during the Monaco Grand Prix and the diamond goes missing. Now, it seems that their advertising has gone astray when they sent out a series of suggestive emails to potential customers, leading some to believe it may be a sign of an affair by their spouse. Who is going to lose their job in marketing over this?

I'm sorry I haven't said much lately...I've been working on the house, doing laundry, working on my paper, y'know, the mundane parts of life that aren't much fun to blog about. No tragedies this week, just sitting at home looking out the window for inspiration and watching a bunny in my backyard having a late lunch. The deck is nearly totally removed now and I must admit I rather like it. It gives me new vistas, and the fence being nearly gone makes the yard look that much bigger. The fun part of all of this is that we're going to burn all of it in a big bonfire for my cousin's graduation. Fire! Fire! (Sorry, having a Beavis and Butthead moment there...) Anyway, hope the summer is going well for you all and when I get this paper done I will regale you all with my take on my 2L year. It probably won't be earth shaking, but I'll try to make it insightful.

When Stephen Gillers is writing affidavits on your behalf, do you really think an ethics charge is going to stick?

Thursday, May 20, 2004

I just received a spam email. This in itself is hardly a rare event, but the subject line got my attention.

There's no place like hoth.

Considering we played the Imperial March at our wedding...I would have to agree.

Beanie is spotty. This is no comment about my quality of work, but rather I am actually covered in spots. Nothing like ending a semester on a high note. When you wake up and look in the mirror to see spots you think of all the horrible things it could be. Measles? No fever. Chicken Pox? Never had it, but I don't itch. Stress? The exams are over dammit! So, off I went to the doctor. Turns out I'm more normal than I thought. I am the victim of a virus catchily known as pityriasis rosea. Seems the cases spike in September and May. It can last 6 to 8 weeks. Yeah summer spots! So I'm not a freak and I don't have the creeping crud, but Beanie has spots.

The exam was handed with an hour to spare. Not a horrible experience, but not easy either. Yes I squandered alot of time, but it still got done. I even got to sleep! Now, the paper must be finished. It can be done. It will be done. I was even offered an incomplete so I could finish it up over the summer and I said that I want this done now. Writing assignments will be the death of me. It held up my bachelors degree for years, and it's not going to hold this up. And for the last time, no I'm not graduating! Do not taunt happy fun ball!

Today is the last exam. Yes, I begin the final take home today. Hopefully I have learned from my experiences last semester and will be able to create and hone a fine piece of work in under 10 hours, unlike my 21 hour debacle last December. I have confidence. I am prepared, I am rested. I have ink and paper. I have money for snacks. I binged on games Sunday just to prepare myself for deprivation today. I watched my fill of TiVo. Yes, today is the day. Get ready.

Tell me you can't read this story without starting to sing the Gilligan's Island theme. And yes, I am procrastinating.

There's a few of us unlucky souls who are not done yet. I have one more exam and a section of my paper to finish and I will be able to say that I am done with the semester. The majority of pressure is off. I had a meeting about the paper with my professor and have a good idea where it needs to go. I was able to attend an end of the semester/birthday party last night for one of my good friends and it was a fabulous relaxing time. I haven't laughed that much in ages. I found out that a person in my own class who I had chalked up to be unfriendly had actually thought I was a 3L. Strangely enough that isn't the first person I know to make that mistake. Is it that I look really old? Is it that I carry myself as someone who actually seems to know what's going on? Is it my devil-may-care attitude? Is it all of the above?

One more exam...woo! Trusts and Estates was difficult, as expected. How sad is it when I anti-essay person was really pulling for an essay? Instead a multiple choice/fill-in-the-blanks is what we got. Of course this couldn't be a normal one choice or possible answer for a blank sort of test but rather a "number of answers for any multiple choice" and the possibility of "none" as a blank. Do not ask about authority when you know damn well that there isn't any...it plays with my head. I could have looked through the books until the cows came home but I still wouldn't find any authority. I'm sure there will be people there until the last second hunting for that authority. Devious...very devious.

Three down, two to go. This exam was difficult but it was for everyone. We just didn't feel prepared to take this test. It eally did need to be open book. In order to improve morale I wore my tortfeasor shirt. I found it particularly appropriate for Products Liability. It got a few laughs. I hope I did okay. No time to dwell on it though, Thursday is Trusts and Estates. This is a serious test. Break out the tabs!

This morning I was interviewing yet again. This prolonged story does have a happy ending though. Seems the interview I did in jeans from last week was a good one after all. I accepted the offer this afternoon. The job from the morning although interesting wouldn't work out. I didn't have the option to wait to find out if I was going to get it either. The drop dead on my only offer was this afternoon. I will actually be gainfully employed after all! I think it's going to be a good fit. This has improved my mood immensely. Now to get through tomorrow afternoon and my Products Liability exam.

Saturday, May 08, 2004

I just got done with my part of the massively massive Products Liability outline. Seems that there is no one who had an outline for this class, so eight of us banded together and decided we would create our own happy outline which could be used for good or evil. This band originally only numbered four, but desperation brings out the best in all of us and four people jumped on our bandwagon. We were happy to have them since it cut down the number of sections we each had to do. So now, I get to wait to see the big finished product come back. What a glorious thing.

One down, 3 to go! I got to experience the wonder that is ExamSoft. Actually the exam went well, it was all the rigmarole that we had to go through before and after that was problematic. Seems the campus took a hit from the Sasser worm yesterday. So to protect us as well as the school we were given Symantec discs and told to scan our laptops before we could take the exam. I don't fault the school for doing this, but did they not realize how long it would take to scan some of our drives? It took me nearly 30 minutes. We had to start the exam late as a result. They did give us free earplugs though. The exam was about what I expected, and I hope I hit all the issues that were there. That's all you can ask for. On to Products Liability!

The draft is on its way through the electronic ether. Seeing as how when I started I had no idea what this was going to look like or even what it was supposed to look like, I took a stab. If my professor can look me in the eye after he reads it, I will consider it a success. Things I have learned from this experience:
1) I am so not an academic.
2) As a result of #1, I will never be a law professor.
3) I'm not mourning the loss of this job prospect.
4) The Bluebook is not your friend, no matter how many people on Review tell you that it is.
5) After 15 hours of staring at your computer, nothing you write resembles the English language.
6) No matter how much you enjoyed your comfy desk chair before, you will come to revile it.
7) The panic over writing it will never leave me. Ever.

I'm cold, I'm hungry and the paper still isn't finished. I'm afraid to go to bed. I have gotten a great deal done tonight, but I have another interview in the morning. If I stop now the momentum may go for naught. However, the fact that I'm getting bug eyed from having looked at a computer screen for the last 12 hours or so must mean something, not to mention the slightly dizzy feeling I have. Why is this so hard? When the substantive part is done, this is going to be a Bluebooking nightmare. Enough I say!

This paper is gonna get written if I've gotta kill someone to do it. How can you write for hours and get a page done? I've entered the Twilight Zone of legal writing. AAAAAGH!

We're up to our eyeballs in exams. Classes end tomorrow. Both the Coke machine and the candy machine are busted. Nothing good can come from this. I've been approached for study sessions for two different exams, which surprised me to say the least. I must be loved. The highlight of my day though had to be my interview this afternoon. You see, when I woke up this morning I didn't know about this interview. In fact, I didn't know about this interview until about 12:00pm. As a result I was not dressed for an interview. It's not say I dress like a slob, but rather normal law school wear. That outfit includes jeans. I haven't interviewed in jeans since I was about 18. I told the person setting up the interviews that I wasn't dressed to interview. I was told that was okay, they really wanted to do the interview today. So at 3:30 I trundled off to the part of the campus where it was going to be held and found it was a group interview with two other people who just happened to be in suits. Did I feel inferior? Yep. I just made myself as comfortable as I could and rolled with the punches. We'll see if my resume overcomes jeans and a sweater.

Just like the majority of you, I too have been trying to stay up with the studying and the paper writing and the gnashing of the teeth about it all. Nothing in my home is being done. I think the dust bunnies may kill me before this is all over. This has allowed my spouse to take up projects I know little or nothing about. For instance, I went to school yesterday to study for Biz Org with some people in my class. I returned a bit over four hours later to find the following: two gaping holes in our rotting but heretofore standing stockade fence, and half our deck removed. Note, neither project was completed or heck even half way completed, but rather looked like our home had been attacked by a heavy wind. I can't imagine what our neighbors must think. Sadly enough that's the least of my problems, and actually I could care less what they think, but the swiss cheese fence situation needs help.
