Today was the memorial service for those whose families had taken part in the Anatomical Gift program over the last year. We never had a funeral for my grandmother at her request, so it was a nice opportunity to take part in a ritual like this. It was stunning how many people had donated over the course of one year. The number of people who attended the graveside service today was also surprising. The speeches by the medical students seemed sincere and heartfelt. The gift meant more to them than I think I would have believed. Her purpose in death was a powerful one. I'm glad I went and heard her name read aloud. Lovely sunny weather, tons of flowers, a gentle breeze, Grandma would have approved.
