This is a question that a couple of us were pondering at work. There was an incident recently where two news helicopters crashed in Phoenix, Arizona while covering a police chase. All four occupants of the two helicopters died. Should the alleged perpetrator of the chase be charged with felony murder for the deaths? Was it foreseeable that something like this could happen? Would it be different if they were news automobiles and he had hit them? And finally, would it have been different if it had happened in Los Angeles where it's assumed that a high speed chase would garner news chopper coverage? Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm exhausted. Very little sleep last night, and getting up insanely early will do that to you. I tried to go back to sleep this morning, but wasn't terribly successful. And to top it off it seems my doctor submitted my insurance claims to the previous insurer, so now I've got to go through that rigmarole. But, I did make deviled eggs this weekend, and played golf, so the weekend was pretty nice. My new clubs are really good. Me as a player? Not as good, but the clubs are doing their darndest. I just need to tap into my internal mad skills. Yeah, the weekend was good...too bad I am starting out the week so beat. It's going to be a long day.

I actually sat in my office this morning and said out loud, "I don't have to sit for the Bar Exam today." And that makes me very happy. Even though I'm past it, it still haunts me. It was like a long illness. And now, I watch other people suffer, and I truly feel bad for them. Though, for those of you who got away with only one bout, I don't feel as bad for them. You have no idea what it's like to do it twice, three times or more. As a result, I don't wish it on anyone. I bid you good luck today, tomorrow and Thursday.

Next week it begins anew, the experience known as the BAR. This is the point in the process where the total panic sets in...I know it well. I wanted to write something uplifting, something inspirational for all you examinees. However, there's not much to say that hasn't been said. So instead, I'll drop a few motes of wisdom.
  • If you're unfamiliar with the place in which you're taking the exam...do a dry run. Drive there and check it out. Figure out parking, traffic patterns, and the like.
  • I'm not going to tell you not to study the morning of the exam, or even between the morning and afternoon sessions, because I did. In fact, something I read in my time-killingness between sessions that came in handy in the afternoon, and nearly did a dance in the exam room. Just don't kill yourself trying to cram.
  • If you're in one of those states that lets you bring snacks, give some thought to this. You want quiet happy snacks. Remember, you'll be wearing earplugs, so chewing is deafening. My secret weapon? Cheese sticks. For some reason they made me happy. And it's calcium!
  • Remember to bring ID. Passports work well for this.
  • Remember your clear plastic bag for all your goodies. Ziplocs are your friend.
And most importantly, remember that in your brain contains the wisdom of the universe...or at least the sliver of it that has been jammed in there over the last 2 months. Give it the opportunity to flourish on the page...within the time given. It can be done.

Damn, that weekend went fast. But...I did make a purchase over the weekend that may pay large dividends to me in the long run. Yes, I will actually own my very own golf clubs. No hand-me-downs, no weird cheap sets, my very own fitted set of clubs. It took nearly 2 hours to do it. So the way I see it, I got an hour lesson out of it too. The key to being fitted is consistency in swinging, which is harder than it sounds. Try to hit a number of golf balls exactly the same and see what you think. It's not possible at my level. Either way, I'll have a set of clubs for me in about 2 weeks. Next stop, professional! (Okay, stop laughing now...)

Yes, another week down. And I still wasn't fired! Every week is a victory. I was even able to sneak in a CLE yesterday. Of course, it wasn't very good, which is sad. But I was able to leave work early to attend, and that's good. Either way, I'm one hour closer to having a clue. Yeah, right. In the meantime, keep your chin up, and keep ducking and weaving. It's nearly the weekend!

In the last two weeks of work, I've billed less than five hours. This is not for lack of trying on my part, it's a distinct lack of things to do. When your boss holds all your work for review and doesn't get back to you, you sit around on your butt. Finally yesterday at 5pm, I was given a new task. I'm not in a good mood about any of this. I have a feeling when hours are looked at, I'm going to get crap for not billing. And of course, that will cause me to get defensive about the fact you can only bill if you have work. There's far too much drama here for such a small office. So instead, I'll do the new task and keep my mouth shut...and wait for the new crisis to rear its ugly head. It happens here with frightening frequency.

Yes, I made it back from golf school in one piece. One small blister on my hand, some odd sunburnt parts, and a set of grass covered golf shoes. I had a hard time articulating what about the trip makes it a vacation since it's a bit of a 3-day athletic marathon, but I think it did improve my mood. You can't be thinking about the vagaries of work and hit a couple hundred golf balls effectively. The limited cell phone service also helps. And so I came back yesterday, tired, sore but in a better frame of mind. Not sure how long that will last, but it's worth trying. That reminds me, I really need to clean up my clubs when I get home...that last round in the rain really left them a mess.
