Screaming Bean

When I was in college we used to say it wasn't a good thing to MUD drunk. It used to amaze me who could actually get logged on while drunk, but it was one of those non-thinking signons that didn't require actual skills. Me, I haven't been driving but I have had a couple drinks this evening. I felt I should update you on what happened today. As you may recall I had mentioned about a possible data entry job. I had to do a real live phone interview for said temp job, and I honestly believed I acquitted myself well. Charming, no use of overly large words, just straight forward about my situation and why I thought I'd be appropriate for the job. The feedback to the agency was also good, and the decision was to be made today. I didn't get the job. Actually, no one got the job. They decided against temps. Therefore I drink. And ate copious amounts of a bloomin' onion, but that was so I could actually walk away from the bar once we were full of imbibing. I feel good. I type well even a little tipsy. No spellcheck for me. No sir. So if you can't give me a job, gimme a drink, will ya?

Well I'm slightly closer to a small temp job. Who knew it was so complicated to get a temp job? I received a call yesterday regarding a possible position as a data entry clerk. Now remember that job title...it's a data entry clerk. Not a secretary, not an admistrative assistant, just me and my fast little fingers. I was told to expect to receive a call this morning. 11am nada...12pm...nope....1pm...uh huh...2:30pm I gave up and called them. Over the last 1 1/2 hours I've been put on hold, called back, called back again, told I had to call the company, told the company will call me...all for a data entry job. And it's only for 2 weeks. And I still don't have the job yet. I have to go through a phone interview tomorrow in hopes of attracting this job. Yeah, I'm really glad I went to law school now.

Okay, I'll admit it. My bracket for the NCAA tournament is toast. I winced when Iowa lost, twitched a little when George Mason kept winning, but the Duke loss pretty much did me in. I have 0 points available to me in the final round, so I've just stopped looking. This is not to say I won't stop watching the games, they've been really entertaining. Nascar these days just bores me to tears, even if it is snowing at the races. How sad is it when the snowball fight is the most interesting part of the race? Me, just give some warm weather and let me play golf already, will ya?

I was a bit stunned how close to the real Bean this test got. Thanks to Ambivalent Imbroglio for the link. Feel free to test your personal DNA here.

My life is punctuated with bouts of looking for things. My only problem is I seem to start looking for an item about 6 months before everyone else. Sushi tableware sets? Ubiquitous now, but 6 months ago I couldn't even find chopsticks rests. It's gladdening to know I'm a trend setter, but at the time when I'm hunting it's maddening. The newest hunt isn't something decorative, but rather something necessary.

Do you have a fireproof safe at your house/apartment? We do. It weighs alot and it lets us keep our important papers safe. What we didn't know when we bought it is that most consumer safes are made with a moisture laden cement mixture within its walls. It helps on the fireproofness but what it also does is create it's own little weather system in its air-tight core. We were looking for a specific paper in the house yesterday and decided the safe might be a place to look. We didn't find the paper but we did find mold. Now, it's not our house because I'm surprised the amount of static electricity formed here hasn't set the rugs on fire. Humidity is so not a problem. But in our safe? Plenty humid. So now the hunt is on for a dessicant. Went to Lowes but the items there are for entire basements or closets, not for a small household safe. Target? Nada. Staples? Nope. But then we remembered, what about shoes? You know when you buy new shoes you get those little silica gel packs that they tell you not to eat. That's just the ticket, but we need more. So where did I turn? EBay. Cause if it's something weird it's got to be there. And it is. So now I have 50 little packs of silica winging their way across the country. So think of this as a public service announcement. Beware of mold in your safe. Moldy diplomas are not cool.

March 16 is one of my favorite days. Today was no different. Ten years ago today I met my spouse for the very first time. We knew each other over the internet for a couple of years, and when spring break plans fell through, a road trip ensued. We met at the mall, and I was wearing a tie-dyed Grateful dead shirt. We ate chinese food. We ended up at the bowling alley with my father because I had forgotten that I had a scotch doubles league night scheduled. We drank green beer and laughed at my bowling skills. My father and I did not win. Back at my home we sat on the couch and talked until the sun came up. We watched the Farm Report. Was it love at first sight? Probably not. Was it even a date? We say no. But it was March 16, 1996. And we're still together.

Today found me at another placement firm. I need a job, so find me a job already. Of course, people lie about their skills so I got to do more exams. I did questions about legal terminology which was a thrill because it was instant gratification. If only the Bar Exam were that easy. And yet, I still got one wrong. What is a memo of points and authorities? It's not regarding exhibits, so I chose wrong. I also have pretty decent skills in Word. I got 80% of those questions right. The ones I got wrong were things I've never actually done. Line numbering? Give me a help file and a few more minutes, I could have figured it out. Most of it was graphics and tables questions that I got wrong. I need to brush up or hope I'm never asked to do it. But before my ego was totally crushed, I did learn I have not lost any of my skills in the typing department. While I may not be blogging like I used to, when I want to I can type 80 wpm. I had to keep from laughing when they told me that. So gimme a job, I won't screw up...and I'll type really fast for you.

Yesterday was a good day. I heard about a possible secretary temp job from a placement agency. I stoked myself up on a couple cups of tea and started working around the house. I even organized my closet. The only downer was a strange phone call I got yesterday afternoon. The area code didn't mean anything to me, but I was bored and decided to answer it. Woman on the other end was from PMBR. She was checking to see if I had sat for the Bar Exam in July and whether I had passed or not. I wasn't going to lie to her, so I told her straight. How weird is that? Has anyone ever received a call from PMBR this far after the fact?

I know I haven't written lately. There's not much to tell really...I came real close to posting yesterday only to have the thought I had go up in smoke once I logged in. I hate when that happens. I'm a great blogger in the car, but can't remember what it was when I get home. Anyway, my life is pretty boring these days. Trying to get a job, reading through job postings that I'm so not qualified for. Could I be an executive director for a museum? I have the degree needed, but that's it. Hell, I don't even qualify for valet parking person...I can't drive stick. And I'm not getting any younger...I wasn't carded when I bought wine today. Of course, how many minors do you know go to the liquor store in the middle of the afternoon to buy a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc? It's not even my first choice, I needed it for a dish I was making. It was okay, nothing to write home about...and yet I'm blogging about it anyway.

While I like spell check as much as the next person, there are times where a little read through would do wonders. For instance, this guy.
