There's really no question where I sit in my politics. I nearly didn't watch the debate tonight. My Evidence professor mentioned that he once got to judge John Kerry during his Gabrielli Trial Competition at Boston College. He said that he was an outstanding advocate even then. The years of practice paid off tonight. No smirking during reaction shots, his timing was perfect, and the skills were honed. I didn't have great hopes for this debate but it's amazing when you don't have high expectations what you get. I almost wished I had gone to campus tonight for the viewing. It would have been nice to see the Republicans on campus slink out of the room.

I had an interview today. I have them with frightening regularity. For instance, I have one tomorrow. I do not say this to brag. If I were, I'd have a job from all this. Instead, I interview. I try to come up with pat answers and thoughtful questions. I try not to look like an idiot. I bring extra everythings and sometimes get asked to produce them. I need two writing samples for tomorrow. I want a good job. While we don't have a true full-blown OCI here, for me it's like it happens every week. It never ends. Dry cleaners love me. I hope it ends soon, I don't need this kind of stress.

I'm supposedly going to get a mentor. Now my prior experience with mentors have not been good ones, the one I got as a 1L never spoke to me, and the one I had as a paralegal became openly hostile when I applied to law school. I'm not holding out a lot of hope for this. I just want someone who is in the field, can discuss the vagaries of the work world and getting a job, and is willing to get a drink with every now and then. My luck I'll get someone who's just looking for an ego boost and has no intention of helping out a lowly 3L. I do have another interview this week though, so maybe I'll get a job without em.

I like Chinese food. For those of you who have been reading a long time, this is not a surprise. I also like sushi, but that's another tale for another day. Chinese food is best when sitting down at a familiar neighborhood restaurant where everyone is glad to see you and you can nosh on a bowl of crispy noodles and duck sauce. The second way is takeout from the local joint where I can get egg drop soup in an instant. The third way is Chinese buffet. I'm not going to disparage the buffet, in fact it can be highly enjoyable when there are infinite crab rangoons and mongolian grill. These places are inevitably all you can eat. As such it grabs a certain clientele that thinks it's all you can eat in one trip. This includes heaps of everything possible. It's also rather disgusting. I'm the opposite sort, I eat in themes. One plate, fried item extravaganza. Another plate, chicken & broccoli, japanese chicken, snow chicken, chicken chicken. These plates are never overloaded, but rather sparse and decorative. I'm not there to eat my weight in food, I'm there for the variety. Pace yourself people, the steam trays are not going anywhere.

I just saw a commercial that was disturbing to say the least. Cue a girl on a set of monkey bars. She starts naming odd items. Bottled water, non perishable food, batteries, a transistor radio, and dust masks. The spouse and I look at each other and say, "Nuclear attack?" No, it's FEMA scaring the hell out of us. Thanks for invoking fear of the 80s. Why not just tell everyone to get the duct tape and the plastic sheeting again. Who's up for a showing of The Day After?

When you're a third year, you need to take your entertainment where you can get it. This has taken its form in perusing the fashion choices of underclassmen and women. There's a quota you see, where each day we try to find one woman on campus who had the misfortune/fortune of wearing a skirt that is truly obscene. By this I mean that it has so little fabric that it is physically impossible to sit down while wearing it. This is a surprisingly easy quota to meet each day. Most times we have it met by 10am. However, it took a turn today when one of the brethren decided that it shouldn't be so much a quota but rather a "two-prong test." While the skirt issue is an easy one, the second prong should be whether said wearer of the skirt is in fact going commando. Seeing that you would have to come into contact with various seating surfaces in that condition, it's horrifying to say the least. Yes, what can I say, we go to school with hooker-wannabes.

Interesting interview...for a solo he does a great deal of interesting corporate work. I can never tell whether I have a chance on an interview. I really need to do a mock interview to see where I'm screwing up. Today, I took it upon myself to wear new shoes. These shoes when I bought them seemingly fit my feet. Either my feet have shrunk or I need heavier socks because I've walked out of these suckers no less than 6 times this morning. I have to wear them tonight for an Inns of Court meeting. I think I'll be schmoozing from one location this evening. No moving around for Beanie...I might throw a shoe.

I have an interview today. It's a nice sounding job for a solo practioner who needs some backup. I used to be a paralegal, I used to do real law work. I miss not doing that. I want to do well on this job interview. My toe is angry about being in shoes. It yells at me everytime I start walking around. I'm running out of sandal season, so it had better heal up quick, else it'll be a long damn winter. In the mean time...think happy job thoughts around 2pm EST. Thank you for your support.

I've been up since 6am. I didn't sleep at home last night. I've been doing my reading since 7am. Why? Because I'm at MBA school today. The sacrifices we make for love. Today finds me learning how to support my spouse through grad school. Wow...I have no idea how that could possibly work. If nothing else I have gotten all my Practice and Evidence reading done for next week. I look like the most diligent student ever. Muhahahahaha.

It's Thursday...the end is in sight. My question for you is, why oh why oh why do the 1Ls insist on wearing stilletos with jeans? The world weary students like us tend to flip-flops, but they're trying to look like Sex in the City. Newsflash...you'll never be Sarah Jessica, no matter how many cosmos you take in on a Thursday night at the bar. You'll have the rest of your professional life to ruin your feet, so stop it. At least be trendier and go with the round toed shoes if you insist on this nonsense...the pointy toed ones are so last year.

I'm in a funk. Yes, I'll readily admit it. My spouse is sequestered for a week for the MBA program and I'm all alone. But you say, "Beanie! You're in law school...surely you have something you can do during this time?" And sure, I do. But when I go home, and I talk to no one I get in a funk. I'm not sure why it's quite so bad this time, occassional business trips don't set me off like this. And it's not even that the hotel is that far away...heck I think I drive further to school. It's just that I'm here, and the spouse is there. I'm in a funk.

Important thing I learned today: "If you drop the C-bomb, there's no taking it back." I didn't actually use the said bomb, but heard it in reference to a near accident in the parking lot. I thought I was a highly strung driver, but this was a whole new level of mania. I'm still giggling.

The spouse starts the grand plan of an MBA tonight. It starts out innocuous enough with a dinner. You're supposed to dress for dinner. I see this as an assignment in itself. Are you savvy enough to know how to appropriately dress for dinner? Being in law school I see it as an interview. While you are accepted for the course, you're interviewing among your peers by dressing the part. For guys, the conundrum comes in on whether you're supposed to wear a jacket. For women, should it be a skirt? I say, overdress. Short of black tie, you'll be okay in full business attire. You can always ditch the jacket, but you can't dress up if you don't have one with you. And of course, if you look like a million bucks, you carry a certain image when you enter a room. I have faith that the spouse will look like a million bucks.

Who knew it wasn't a crime to have sex with a dead body in California?

I think I may have set a record for fastest receipt of a ding letter. My packet with resume and writing sample went out Thursday night about 5:00. The ding letter was sent out Friday. I received it today. Did they have time to actually read the writing sample? Ah well...tomorrow is another day.

Today was the memorial service for those whose families had taken part in the Anatomical Gift program over the last year. We never had a funeral for my grandmother at her request, so it was a nice opportunity to take part in a ritual like this. It was stunning how many people had donated over the course of one year. The number of people who attended the graveside service today was also surprising. The speeches by the medical students seemed sincere and heartfelt. The gift meant more to them than I think I would have believed. Her purpose in death was a powerful one. I'm glad I went and heard her name read aloud. Lovely sunny weather, tons of flowers, a gentle breeze, Grandma would have approved.

So this was the week of the holiday...how can I be getting so far behind? More time in the library. Too much talking. Too much overseeing fellow student employees. Too much staring out the windows. Another interview today, and the strangest question I have ever had, "What do you think will be the worst thing about this job?" Um...yeah, I'm sure you'll come up with something worse. After my pattern in jobs, can it truly get much worse? I'd rather not think about it.

Tuesday, September 07, 2004

Hope your holiday was fulfilling. The toe is healing nicely, though I do think that I did actually break it. Our family in Florida made it through yet another hurricane with a loose carport, some flying palm fronds and a ton of rain. Here's hoping Ivan looks the other way. Yesterday was our 6th wedding anniversary. I can't believe it's been 6 years already. But then again, it just seemed like yesterday that I started law school. I don't feel old...hey you kids, get off my lawn!

Thursday, September 02, 2004

Yeah, yesterday was a waste. Just when you thought it couldn't get worse I smashed the hell out of my foot last night. My pinky toe is now purply. To make things worse it's on my right foot. Therefore driving is a whole new experience in pain. I end up driving way faster than I want, one, to get it over with, and two, because pressing down is less painful than lifting up. Gives a whole new meaning to leadfoot. Luckily, my psychic abilities seem to have returned, allowing me to predict with startling clarity where the cops are hiding. I'm coming...hobbling along...but I'm coming.

Today I'm in a funk. That's the best way to describe it. My new job doesn't inspire thoughts of anything except, "Why am I here?" Then again, I knew that going in, so that's not any shock. I spent a good portion of today scowling for no apparent reason. I think I've developed a blister on my foot. I need a piece of gum. Even listening to loud music in the library has not improved my mood. Evidence didn't enliven my day. I need to start a riot or something. Maybe that'd help.
