Oh, what a brave new world with such homework in it! I need to get ahead of the game before the end of this week, since we're going away for break. It seems that very few people are going away this year. The answers vary...some due to finances...some due to too much work. I knew I had to get away. I'm getting really cranky. Even with spring rearing its sleep addled head here it's not soon enough. Sadly though, it looks like I will be bringing at least some of my books with me. I can see it now...Trusts and Estates flashcards on the beach. Mmm, good times.

I had another interview today. It was a short interview, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing. It's an interesting unique firm that I would not mind working for. I can never tell how these interviews go, I just hope out of all of this I get an offer somewhere. I have another interview with a different firm next week, but who knows how it will all fall out...just the list of people who are interviewing with me each time makes me cringe. Journal people, people at the top of our class, and me. I know people are wondering how I get the interviews...heck I know the career people are wondering how I get them, but I do. I just have to get one to hit pay dirt.

Yes, this case has it all...divorce, a dead old guy, probate, a cockatiel, a gray parrot, and oh did I mention the bison?

I've flown on Southwest Airlines before. I didn't enjoy the experience. If I wanted to be herded like cattle I'd live on a farm. The fares aren't cheap enough to justify not giving me a reserved seat. However, after reading Wilson v. Southwest Airlines Co., 517 F.Supp. 292 (N.D. Tex. 1981) for Employment Discrimination class, I like them even less. All the innocuous logos that you see today arise from a much darker place in the minds of the original founders. Even their stock ticker designation "LUV" has a part in it. I feel dirty now. At least Hooters Air is more blatant about it. Though I'm sure the argument can be made, "Owls fly...yeah, that's it."

Tonight we negotiate. My partner from the moot court competition last semester decided to join me again for a negotiations competition. We have faith in our skills and hope like hell we make it beyond the first round. If not, it'll be the third competition this year in which I only did the first round. My last experience negotiating in law school had me pegged as the bad cop in the bad cop/good cop scenario, but I promise I'll be nicer this time. While the shock factor of me being angry is always good for putting people off their plan, I don't feel confident enough in the fact pattern to really be able to pull this off again. Of course, wouldn't it be funny if someone on the other team is reading this. If so, HI! Ah, who am I kidding, no one at my school reads this.

One of the oddest things I've ever seen at law school happened today. Our Trusts and Estates professor came in disguise to teach the class (the fake mustache was a nice touch), which was odd enough, but then took the last 10 minutes of the class to tell us about Mardi Gras and throw beads at us, all while playing zydeco music. Yes it was strange, but the best part of it was the people who came in late to class and wondered what the heck was going on.

I have another job interview today. Hopefully this is a better experience than my last one. I got my haircut for this, dressed up in my best suit, reviewed the firm's webpage, and found out the interviewer is the same age as me. Is this a bad thing? I really need to come up with a pat answer for "What sort of law are you looking to practice?" However, I don't feel strongly about any particular part of the law enough to say with authority, "I really want to practice _blah_". I just want a job. I will grow to love whatever it is I practice (as long as it's not health law).

Okay, so we've learned I'm a bizarre code section. I have yet to see anyone who has the same rule as me. But that's okay! I just got a check for $13 from the CD price fixing litigation. Yeah for class action suits! I might be able to buy a CD with that....if it is on sale.

YOU ARE 28 UNITED STATES CODE SECTION 1332!

You are not a Federal Rule of Civil Procedure at all: you're the statute that allows the federal district courts to hear diversity of citizenship actions! You were drafted with the idea that an out-of-state party may be unduly prejudiced by appearing in a foreign state. People think that you're strange, and they try to minimalize your effects by requiring an amount in controversy and by being especially strict on the requirements for diversity. However, like that weird kid that nobody likes, you always show up to the party. Section 1332 is bizarre enough, it is even more bizarre that it provides an apt metaphor for your personality.

Nothing much new here but an orgiastic frenzy of building IKEA furniture. This has thrown the household into chaos as we then decided to paint the room, and of course that in turn caused us to empty the room, meaning furniture and items hither and thither through the house. No laundry getting done, no bathroom being cleaned, just cams and dowels and paintbrushes. I think we have lost our minds. Here Flygge Flygge Flygge...

Each morning on the way to school one of the local radio stations has taken to playing "Darling Nikki" as covered by Foo Fighters. I'm usually not one for cover songs, but something about Dave Grohl trying to emulate Prince just cracks me up. I know he's a huge fan of Prince, but I think what's even funnier is now this song can be played on the radio. When Prince's version came on the scene, it caused Tipper Gore to found the Parents Music Resource Center. She saw it as one of the signs of the apocolypse. (This also brought John Denver, Frank Zappa and Dee Snider to appear before Congress, but I digress. If you want to see the list of the original 'Filthy Fifteen', look here.) Now, a girl masturbating with a magazine in a hotel lobby is no big thing. And yes, I do own a copy of Purple Rain, and yes I've always liked that song, and yes I do sing along in my car. However, I think my version of Dave Grohl's version of Prince loses something in translation.

I'm feeling like a giant slacker these days. I may have a judicial placement, and a part time job, and 4 classes and a paper, but that's like napping compared to what is going on around here. We're in the midst of competition season, and not being on a traveling team leaves me with seemingly tons of free time. I'm not running for a board position for moot court. I'm not on review. Am I missing out on the full experience here? In trying to fill out my days I've given a good deal of thought to bar review courses. While I have a deposit down on one of the big courses, a deal has arisen for a competing course and I'm wondering if I should jump ship. I wouldn't lose my deposit, so that's not an issue. I also realize it's more than a year away, but I like getting certain things out of the way. Anyone have any strong personal preferences about this? One of my friends is a rep for one of these companies, so I'm trying to keep that out of the equation.

Yes, I had yesterday off. To celebrate this rare event, I went to the mecca of pseudo Scandinavian furniture and forced globalization, IKEA. I bought large items that came in oddly heavy flat boxes. I had swedish meatballs. I got stuck in traffic. Things we pondered while waiting to get these items: if you hire someone to put these things together, do they have the right to sit on your living room floor and swear like you do while putting them together? Why are we here again? Did we just spend way too much money on flatpacked furniture? How the hell do we get home? I can no longer enter my family room due to the boxes now. But that's okay. The fact that those same heavy boxes need come upstairs now? Not okay.

Happy Valentine's Day! For those of you who remember ASCII art...a flower for you:

----,-'-{@

Yes, the ASCII takes me back to the days of usenet, LYNX, and my undergrad VAX account. When I want to freak out my fellow law students I wax nostalgic about the days when the "web" didn't have pictures, I used to mud, and used to read alt.goodmorning. This is usually met with blank stares, but hey I've always been a person of technology. In Kindergarten I used to spend time in the computer lab on a PET with a cassette tape drive. I remember printing out big banners in junior high with fanfold paper and Print Shop. Is it any wonder that I bring my laptop to classes and type my notes? Do not fear the computer, it cannot hurt you...but it can selectively forget your important files if you taunt it.

Well, while a good time was had by all, I think we've become duds in our old age. Well, I'm about 5 years older than them, but there really wasn't any drinking involved. So much for my margarita dreams. Between the group, everyone of us had to get up early either for a clinic, a job, or in my case my judicial placement. And seeing as how I'm driving the carpool this morning, I have to be responsible and sober like. Ah well, so much for the bucolic Thursdays of youth...or last year for that matter.

A friend of mine is having a birthday tomorrow. This person has told us this repeatedly, but that's okay, it wasn't a ploy for gifts. A couple of us decided we would take this person out for dinner tonight in order to celebrate. We left the decision of the place to go up to the birthday person. I thought it was decided a day or so ago that we were going to Chili's, more for the margaritas than the food. However, today took a strange turn and the want has turned to pancakes. The original idea was IHOP, but I'm leaning toward Denny's, or one of the local diners. What do you drink with pancakes anyway? Pancakes are so not a margarita food.

If only those shrimp chips were caffeinated. I cannot stay awake these days. I did spend a good deal of time at the court today, and had a lovely conversation with the judge. This placement is the best thing about law school, hands down. If I didn't need the money I'd volunteer to work there this summer, but I need the cash. The thing is I come home and immediately want to nap. I gave in to the impulse and napped last night, but I don't want this to become a habit. I'm not a nap person. I gave up napping at the age of 2 according to my mother. Instead of actually sleeping she found me sitting in my crib picking apart my diaper and flinging the batting inside about the room. Yup, I was precocious.

Tuesday, February 10, 2004

I stopped off and picked up a few things on the way home this evening. I needed rice and rice wine. That's all I needed. What I bought: Kasugai Grape Gummies, Instant Pho, Orange Fish Sauce, and Shrimp Chips. I'm particularly fond of Shrimp Chips. However, the type I normally buy and what I bought today were two different things. These are wasabi flavored shrimp chips. The picture on the bag shows two shrimps that are either crying or sweating. I believe I may have lost feeling in my tongue from eating these. Yet, I can't stop eating them.

From the 'bout damn time department:

NY Times: Finally acceding to the wishes of millions of "Star Wars" fans, Fox is announcing today that the first three films of George Lucas's celebrated series — "Star Wars" (1977), "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) and "Return of the Jedi" (1983) — are to be released on DVD for the first time on Sept. 21. The three films, long among the most requested, are now the last three in a series of six. Two prequels to the original film, "Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace" and "Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones," are already on DVD. A third prequel, "Star Wars Episode III" (no further name selected) is to be released in theaters in May 2005. If this is confusing, further realize that the first "Star Wars," now the fourth film of the series, has been renamed "Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope."

Wow, where did today go? Even forgetting my ethernet cable this morning did nothing to slow down the pace of the day. And to top it off, had an interview best described as good cop bad cop. I got to recite my transcript grade for grade without being told to bring my transcript. Yet, I still have to fax it in. As if I'd lie about my grades. If I were to lie, they'd be a heck of a lot better than what I just said they were. We'll see if it comes to pass. I'm not holding my breath.

Weiners weiners weiners. The world has gone to weiners. Horizontal weiners, vertical weiners, edible weiners... Here we thought that the Super Bowl was rife with weiner drugs, Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, and now it has invaded Nascar. (I've just been informed that I've somehow violated the law blog taboo of talking about Nascar, but stay with me on this one.) We have the subtle I'm staying in the game commercial, we have the wife making doe eyes at her husband because he just visited his urologist commercial, and Mark Martin, the shortest driver in Nascar talking about Viagra. No, the irony is not lost on me. Still, it gets better...Mark Martin's car before just screamed Viagra, it had a big old logo smack dab on the hood. Tonight, his primary sponsor? Oscar Meyer. I'll leave you to make your own jokes.

Word of the day: mishegaas
n. Slang - Crazy or senseless activity or behavior; craziness.

I think it says it all.

In honor of my grandmother, I remind you all that today, February 6 is National Wear Red For Women Day. Heart disease and stroke are the number 1 and number 3 killers of women. By wearing red, you are helping to support all women who have been touched by cardiovascular disease, and those who love them.

Okay, I feel robbed. First ER does a quick edit to prevent the mass hysteria caused by a nipple, and then where the hell was the tank? I saw clips with a tank, and there was no tank. However, I do like the quote from Friends tonight, "Paper...Snow...A Ghost!!!" I think I've found a new catch phrase.

Sleeping is a lost art to me these days. I fell asleep in the midst of my Employment Discrimination reading. It's not nearly as compelling as my Products Liability case book. Who can't enjoy a good golf ball to the head? I finally gave up the ghost and went to bed, only to be tormented with the oddest dreams I can remember. First, everything I observed happened in threes. It wasn't a small accident, it was three cars. It wasn't one person, it was always 3. I myself crashed a car in the dream at least 3 times that I can remember. And yet, I still woke up 5 minutes before my alarm went off. I then had a long argument with myself over whether I should actually go to school today or sleep some more in the hopes for dreamless rest. As you can tell, the slacker in me lost and I came to class. Though if I'm blogging, isn't the slacker winning?

Wednesday, February 04, 2004

Yup, it's been one of those mornings. When they started cracking down on the parking situation here, I didn't think it'd mean guarded lots at 7:30am. And not guarding the property within the lots, but guarding to prevent people from coming in. Are they creating a bailment here? Is there an expectation of safety? I see liability here. That'll miff you certainly, but then to have the string to your teabag break 15 minutes later? I think I should just pack it in and go home. The omens are piling up.

Yeah, I know what I'm giving for Valentine's Day...nothing says love like this!

Monday, February 02, 2004

Oh, I nearly forgot, Happy Groundhog Day! Yes, Punxsutawney Phil and Wiarton Willie both said 6 more weeks of winter, but Shubenacadie Sam from Nova Scotia said spring is coming fast. Personally, if I were a groundhog and someone wearing a goofy top hat yanked me out of my nice warm hole and woke me out of my lovely hibernation I'd just bite the first hand I found and jump back in my hole. But that's just me.

You've got to enjoy classes that are seated in alphabetical order...or even better, since it's spring semester, seated in reverse alphabetical order. It's then even more fun when the professor takes the alphabetical scheme to heart and begins to call on people based on said order. When you realize you're the only one in your class having your letter? Panic! Of course, I have another class where the professor picks a letter at random and works backwards within the letter. Too many times people think they're off the hook, and bam! Why can't we just submit the seating chart ourselves and have the attendance monitors work off of that? They don't care...if you're not in the seat, you're absent. Nearly 3 weeks in is not the time to play musical chairs...I need my space!

Like most of the country, I too am watching the Super Bowl, though mostly for the commercials. Two epics in one year...Troy and the Alamo. Excellent. Lots of Anheuser-Busch commercials...to be expected. The Mitsubishi commercial that sent you to the website to see how it ended...yes I'm a lemming and I went. Commercials for CBS shows...also expected. The futuristic lawyer show Century City? Nothing on the CBS website. Did I hallucinate that one?
